Rancilio Silvia is a very reliable machine and has a strong
following online. You can get all your questions answered easily with a little
The machine does require an excellent grinder and a thorough understanding of espresso dosing, distribution, tamping, and temperature.
The machine’s thermostat swings the brew temperature across a range that is too wide for espresso. It’s possible to flush the boiler to hit approximately the right brew temperature just before brewing. However the best upgrade is to install a PID to always be at the right brew temperature for the bean type being used.
The steam pressure is very good and it’s possible to produce great micro foam with practice.
The machine requires regularly descaling if using municipal water.
Also, the machine is shipped from the factory with the brew pressure set too high, so an adjustment to 8.5 bar is very useful. Other minor upgrades include replacing the screw on the brew screen and the brew screen itself to get less channeling and better water dispersion. A bottomless portafilter and an aftermarket basket are also good upgrades.
