Coffee Shop Business Success - Be Helpful, Not a Salesman

20th Jul 2018

Let’s be honest, nobody really likes a pushy salesperson. There’s a reason we hide when we see one approaching our home, and there’s a reason we joke about “used car salesmen”. Nobody wants to feel like something is being pushed on them, but at the same time you still need to sell your product. While this is true, instead of trying to actively sell, put your attention and focus on customer service. Developing a positive and relaxed business space along with cultivating friendly relationships with your customers will help create an environment where they will want to spend more time and consequently, more money.

A lot of times when a customer engages with you or your staff, they will be asking questions. Whether these questions are about your business, or your products it’s extremely important that you and your staff are knowledgeable and willing to help. Because you are in the food and beverage industry, it is especially vital to be well-informed on all information pertaining to food allergies and special dietary needs, such as gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan and nut-free.

Being able to confidently answer questions about your establishment will help build trust with your patrons. Also, be conscious of the kind of questions they are asking and any concerns they may have. Doing so will tell you a lot about your customer base and help you to better accommodate them.

Another great way to become more familiar with your customer base is to simply converse with them. Strike up a conversation, ask open ended questions and try to get them to open up. If you know how they are feeling, you may be able to suggest something for them. For instance, if they are feeling tired perhaps a nice cup of coffee would perk them up, or maybe a sweet treat would lift their spirits. Attempting to really understand and listen to your patrons leaves a good, lasting impression and in the end, they will be more receptive to purchase from you, without you having to be a “salesman”.
