Tips to Making Great French Press

This is a recipe for a 5 cup press pot. This will produce about 2 regular cups of coffee. Scale the recipe according to your needs and the size of the French Press you have.

You will need 34 grams of coffee that has been coarsely ground. We suggest a grinder like the Baratza Virtuoso, Baratza Vario or Baratza Forte for optimal grinding results. You can weigh the coffee with a kitchen scale or one of the Caffe Arts scales we sell. You will also need a kettle designed for pour overs. One of the Caffe Arts kettles we sell would work well.
The first step is to prepare your French Press and your drinking cups by prewarming them with hot water. You will also want to put your kettle on the stove with 500 grams of water and heat it to 200 degrees. If you let it get too hot, you’ll get bitterness in the cup, so check it with a kitchen thermometer. If don’t have one, check our accessories section. Next put your coffee on your scale and weigh out 34 grams. Grind it as a course setting so that the particles are about the size of kosher salt. Pour out the hot water you used to warm your French Press and pour in the ground coffee. Make sure the grounds are about level at the bottom of the French Press.

Start a timer. Using the gooseneck pour over kettle with the 200 degree water, slowly pour it over the coffee grounds. The pour should be even and in a circular motion. After you’ve poured about half the water, pause for 30 seconds to let the grinds “bloom”. Slowly stir the grinds once or twice, then pour in the rest of the water. Now take the French Press lid and let the plunger rest on the top of the grinds. When your timer shows 4 minutes, push the plunger down. Push down slowly and evenly. To prevent over extraction, pour the coffee immediately into your cups.

An exception to this is commercial espresso machines and espresso machines that require shipment on a pallet via Less Than a Truckload. This is sometimes included free, but contact us for details.

In stock items that ship via UPS usually ship within 1 to 2 business days. Heavier products such as commercial espresso machines are shipped via freight truck strapped to a pallet and it generally takes 1 to 3 business days to benchtest and arrange shipment. Transit times depend on the distance being shipped, but this map provides a general idea of shipment times in business days for items shipped via UPS. Freight truck shipment usually takes 3 to 8 business days depending on distance.

IMPORTANT: Water quality is a very important aspect of your espresso machine longevity. Water that is too hard will cause limescale buildup, which is the number one reason for operating problems. Too pure water, such as ultra pure RO water or distilled water can cause the machine to overfill, since the water level probe needs some minerals in the water to detect water. Use softened water that is about 50ppm in hardness. More info

PLEASE NOTE: Most machines and grinders are inspected for damage after being shipped from overseas. This means most boxes will have signs of being opened even though they are brand new products. This is done to ensure that the equipment made the international shipment in good condition and working order.

COMMERCIAL EQUIPMENT NOTE: Most commercial equipment ships on a pallet and has to be bench tested prior to shipment. For this reason, commercial equipment usually ships out three to five business days after the order is received. Some commercial equipment is also special order and/or has limited availability, so please check with us prior to placing an order. Check terms and conditions page for terms relating to commercial equipment.
