The Baratza Vario-W is high performance grinder that has many of the same features that the world reknown Baratza Vario grinder has, but has an outstanding weight based dosing feature that takes the Vario-W to an even higher level.
The Baratza Vario-W has three programmable buttons that can be adjusted to deliver a precise amount of ground coffee – every time! The front of the grinder has a LED control panel with the buttons. Weight adjustment is done in increments of +/- 0.1 grams. After the buttons have been programmed, producing a consistent grounds dose is as simple as selected the desired dose and pressing the Start button. A built in load cell measures the weight of grounds after the selected dose is started. After the precise dose has been delivered, the grinder will stop automatically.
The grinding burrs on the Vario-W provide a wide range of grind sizes with a narrow particle size distribution. With grind sizes ranging from 230 microns to 1150 microns, the Vario-W is an ideal grinder for a wide range of brew methods, from manual pour over to espresso. The burrs are professional grade, 54 mm wide, and remain sharp much longer than the best steel burrs on the market. In fact, according to some estimates, they stay sharp about 2 times longer!
The Vario-W has great output, with the capability of producing 2.2 grams/second for Press and 1.6 grams/second for espresso.
If coffee beans are exposed to heat during the grinding process, it can burn the beans, adversely altering their flavor. To provide cool operating environment, the Vario-W is equipped with a high torque DC motor that turns the burrs slowly using a belt driven transmission, reducing heat during operation and allowing for longer operation. As an added benefit, the high torque provides a quieter operating experience compared to similar grinders without this feature.
Use macro and micro grind size adjustments to choose from 200 different grind sizes. The macro adjuster allows you to adjust the grind size using 10 unique steps ranging from very course to very fine. The micro adjuster allows you to subdivide each macro settings into 20 unique sub-settings. These settings allow for a wide range of sizes, while making repeatability an easier task to achieve. The repeatability allows you to find a perfect particle size for each of your preferred brewing techniques and use the exact same settings consistent in the future.
Each Vario-W grind range is calibrated at the factory, but if adjustment is every needed, the burrs can be calibrated at any time using a calibration device that is shipped with the grinder.
Cleaning the excess grounds and residue from the grinder on a regular basis provides more flavorful coffee as grounds left in the grinding chamber will become stale, altering the flavor of fresh grounds passing through the grinder. With some grinders, keeping the burrs clean is a difficult process, but not with the Baratza Vario-W – burrs can be easily removed for cleaning without requiring any tools. While periodic cleaning is still a good idea, the burrs and grinding chamber on this grinder are specially engineered to keep excess coffee grounds to a minimum.
